The Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network connects you with the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers through 150 exceptional parks, wildlife refuges, museums, sailing ships, historic communities, trails and more. Gateways are the special places where you can experience the authentic Chesapeake.
Many residents in the area know the holiday season has begun when they see the illumination of Sandy Point State Park. They have made driving through Anne Arundel Medical Center’s holiday light show “Lights on the Bay” at the park a family tradition for the past 10 years.
The “Lights on the Bay” event, which opens Nov. 18 and runs through Jan 1., features a scenic drive along the shore of the Chesapeake Bay where more than 60 spectacular animated and stationary displays illuminate the roadway.
Sandy Point State Park. This 786 acre park on the Chesapeake Bay is celebrating 50 years. Opened on June 25, 1952, the park offers an array of recreational activities. These include swimming, fishing, crabbing, boating and windsurfing. The park’s beaches and picnic areas provide unparalleled views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge over the Chesapeake Bay as well as frequent passing of seagoing freighters and sailing regattas. Wildlife viewing and bird watching are favorite pastimes for many park visitors. Sandy Point’s location on the eastern flyway makes it an ideal location for viewing a large variety of woodland, marsh and migratory waterfowl. A park map is available at the park office.
Broadneck Park is located at 618 Broadneck Road in Arnold and is open all year from sunrise to sunset. The park features Walking/Jogging Trails, an Exercise Course, Biking, Baseball/Softball Fields, Multipurpose Fields, Playground, Picnic Area, Pavilion, Concession Stand, Restrooms, Dog Park, the Andy Smith Equestrian Center, and the Noah’s Ark Wildlife Rescue Center.

The Friends of Quiet Waters Park is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 and duly registered in the state of Maryland. The objective of the Friends is to support the operations of Quiet Waters Park – an Anne Arundel County Park
Historic London Town and Gardens is a twenty-three acre park located on the South River in Edgewater, Maryland. The park is owned by Anne Arundel County and managed by the London Town Foundation, a non-profit foundation. London Town has within its boundaries part of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century town of London, which is currently being excavated by archaeologists from the Lost Towns Project.
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is a 2,800-acre environmental research and educational facility operated by the Smithsonian Institution located in Edgewater, MD on the Rhode and West Rivers. The center’s focus of study is on the ecosystems of coastal zones, particularly in the Chesapeake Bay wetlands.
Aiming to connect all the major cities of the East Coast along a continuous, off-road path, the East Coast Greenway spans 3,000 miles from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida. With the trail now 21 percent open for public use, individuals and communities all along the East Coast are already beginning to enjoy the Greenway’s many health and economic benefits.
