Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority

The Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority‘s mission is to plan and develop waste management systems that meet the highest environmental standards while providing the most efficient and reliable waste disposal services possible. We take an integrated approach to waste management by combining recycling with combustion and energy recovery, composting and landfilling. At the same time, we place a special emphasis on waste reduction. An underlying goal, inherent in all Authority projects, is to minimize waste disposal costs.

Maryland Historical Trust

The Maryland Historical Trust is a state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past.  Through research, conservation and education, the Trust assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage.  The Trust is an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning and serves as Maryland’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.

The Trust was created in May of 1961 as a quasi-public corporation for the purpose of accepting and maintaining gifts of property and for assisting and encouraging preservation activities throughout the state.  Funding was provided by the State and leadership was provided by a Board of Trustees which still exists today.  Over the next few years, a survey and inventory program was initiated and financial assistance programs including state-funded grants and loans were developed.

Over time, the Trust’s mission has grown to include the review of state undertakings on historic propertiesassistance to non-state historical and cultural museumscultural conservation, underwater archeology, and heritage tourism activities.  Programs of the Trust include the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM) located in Calvert County, Maryland.  This 560-acre property was donated to the State of Maryland in trust to the Maryland Historical Trust on June 16, 1983 by Mrs. Jefferson Patterson to be a passive recreation, education, and research facility.   Today, JPPM is home to the State Museum of Archeology and the award-winning Maryland Archeological Conservation Laboratory.

Maryland Critical Area Commission

Maryland Critical Area CommissionThe Critical Area Act, passed in 1984, was significant and far-reaching, and marked the first time that the State and local governments jointly addressed the impacts of land development on habitat and aquatic resources. The law identified the “Critical Area” as all land within 1,000 feet of the Mean High Water Line of tidal waters or the landward edge of tidal wetlands and all waters of and lands under the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The law created a statewide Critical Area Commission to oversee the development and implementation of local land use programs directed towards the Critical Area.

The Commission developed criteria that were used by local jurisdictions to develop individual Critical Area programs and amend local comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, and subdivision regulations. The programs that have subsequently been adopted by local governments are specific and comprehensive. They are designed to address the unique characteristics and needs of each county and municipality and together they represent a comprehensive land use strategy for preserving and protecting Maryland’s most important natural resource, the Chesapeake Bay.

US Coast Guard Auxiliary 5th Dist SR

US Coast Guard AuxiliaryThe U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer, civilian, non-military arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. It serves the general public through boating-safety classes, vessel safety checks, and safety patrols on the water and in the air. Members of the Auxiliary have no law-enforcement powers and issue no permits or citations. However, we do work closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of the boating public.

In 1939 Congress created the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary to serve as the civilian, non-military component of the Coast Guard. Today, over 27,000 volunteer men and women of the Auxiliary are active on the waterways and classrooms in over 2,000 cities and towns across the nation. Each year, Auxiliarist (people just like you) save almost 500 lives, assist some 15,000 boaters in distress, conduct more than 150,000 courtesy safety examinations of recreational vessels, and teach over 500,000 students in boating and water safety courses. The results of these efforts save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

The USCG Auxiliary for the 5 th District Southern Region supports the boating public and the United States Coast Guard in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina and Washington D.C..

Beat the New E-Z Pass Monthly Fees

ezpassI just received a letter from E-ZPass Maryland informing me that I will have to start paying a $1.50 per month “account maintenance fee.” It seems to me that one of the main purposes of E-ZPass is to ease congestion at toll plazas and to save the Transporation Authority money — fewer toll booths and attendants are needed, not to mention benefits from less highway congestion and dealing with fewer coins.

The “No BS Zone Blog” proposes a Way to Avoid Maryland’s EZ Pass Fee. Esentially, you can turn your transponders in to the MTA and open a new account with and get transponders from an authority in an another state. Wikipedia has a list of Account fees by agency. It looks like the Peace Bridge Authority of New York and Ontario has the best terms.

Anne Arundel County crime map

Arundel Crime Map

Arundel Crime Map

The Baltimore Sun has just released an interactive crime map of Anne Arundel county. The map combines automatic weekly feeds from the Arundel Police communications office with the power of Google Maps. The resulting visualizations allow citizens quick and easy access to hard crime data. A search form allows you to specify type of crime, time period, and location. Crime incidents show up as markers on the map which expand to give more detailed information when clicked.

Peter Hermann’s blog also has a writeup of the new system: “The information is out there; assembling it can be quite a task. I’m of the position that the crime data should come from the police. This is public information and there is excuse in this day an age not to post it all on the Internet, almost as it comes in.”

CrimeReports.com also has a similar system which provides the last 60 days of “Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)” data generated by calls for service. The disclaimer states that the map does “not provide specific information related to how a crime was committed or who was involved.  The information provided will only allow users to get a general sense of the types of calls for service that have been generated through the CAD system, the volume of calls for service received, and the classification of those calls.  To ensure that victim, witness, or suspect information is not compromised, calls are mapped depicting only the general block number of the incident, as opposed to the specific address (for example, 1200 Main Street instead of 1234 Main Street).”
