Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade

Every year on the second Saturday in December, magic happens on the water of the Annapolis Harbor … boats suddenly appear out of the cold winter night illuminated with thousands of colored lights and crewed by jolly revelers. Families and friends gather at their favorite viewing spots along the waterfront to see this yearly spectacle and to celebrate the holiday season together. The Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade is one of Annapolis’ signature events.

2010 marks The Eastport Yacht Club’s 28th annual Lights Parade in Annapolis Harbor.  The Lights Parade will take place along the Annapolis Spa Creek waterfront, below and above the bridge. For the parade, area boaters decorate their sailboats and powerboats with holiday lights and decorations. The lights can be seen along Spa Creek, the Severn River (near and opposite the USNA), and Ego Alley/City Dock. Date: Saturday, December 11, 2010 Time:  6:00pm to 8:00pm followed by fireworks.

Charles Carroll House

charles carroll houseCelebrating three generations and an urban cultural landscape that spans over 300 years, the Carroll House is a restoration-in-progress. This national historic landmark bears great historical significance to the state of Maryland and America as the home of Charles Carroll the Settler, first Attorney General of Maryland who settled here in 1706, his son, Charles Carroll of Annapolis, and his grandson, Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832).

Charles Carroll of Carrollton was one of four Marylanders to sign the Declaration of Independence. Carroll was the only Roman Catholic and the last survivor of all 56 signers dying in 1832 in his 96th year. Charles Carroll and his family played a major role in the framing of the governance of Maryland and the emerging United States. Carroll¹s accomplishments and persistent efforts to promote and establish the concept of religious toleration were embodied in the founding documents and laws of our country still used today for “all men who are created equal.”

USNA Band

United States Naval Academy BandEver since the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, when the “Band” consisted of a fifer and a drummer, music has been an important part of Naval Academy life. Officially formed in November 1852, the United States Naval Academy Band has established a reputation for outstanding musical support to the Brigade of Midshipmen and the surrounding community. The current version of the Naval Academy Band is a far cry from the thirteen men who reported to Annapolis over 150 years ago. Today, due to the unmatched versatility of its members, the band is able to blend tradition and change into a wide variety of musical styles.

The United States Naval Academy Marching Band may head up a column of midshipmen on parade before dignitaries on Worden Field, advance into Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for a contest on the gridiron, escort a fallen shipmate to his final resting place, or represent the Navy and Naval Academy on “Main Street, USA” in their Memorial Day celebration.

The Concert Band performs a year-round public concert series featuring a variety of programming from light classics and marches to classic band literature and patriotic songs. Special events throughout the year include the Side-By-Side concert featuring local high school musicians, and the Summer Finale concert, featuring Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture”. Smaller ensembles and soloists are featured in the Chamber Music Series, a variety of recitals planned and presented by individual band members.

Acting as the United States Naval Academy’s musical ambassadors to the nation, Electric Brigade, the Navy’s premier Pop Music Ensemble, supports the Brigade of Midshipmen and is also a major public relations tool for the Navy. In addition to performances for Naval Academy functions ranging from the Graduation Ball during Commissioning Week to informal dances and pep rallies, Electric Brigade supports Navy Recruiting by performing at Naval Academy Admissions events around the country.

Hammond-Harwood House

Hammond-Harwood HouseThe Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis is one of the premier colonial houses remaining in America from the British colonial period. The house was designed by the architect William Buckland in 1773-74 for wealthy farmer Matthias Hammond. The museum is open to the public for guided tours. Special activities which focus on colonial history, art and architecture are scheduled throughout the year.

The Hammond-Harwood House is a five part Anglo-Palladian (derived from 16th Italian architect Andrea Palladio) mansion that features some of the best woodcarving and plasterwork in America.  It maintains a kind of symmetry and system of proportions that are rarely seen in buildings of this period.  While most 18th century structures were fashioned by amateurs and artisans, the Hammond-Harwood house was clearly the work of a trained professional architect.
